I am making work about a growing up during a war that is rooted in an agenda of racism. Much of the source material that I draw from is found in ‘realistic’ war-themed video games, educational textbooks, and the news, as well as adaptations of Aladdin and a Thousand and One Nights. By abstracting them from their original contexts and transforming them through the drawings, I’m responding to being cultured through those images. I chose ballet specifically because of it’s aesthetic and cultural ties to the visualization and performance of whiteness. The multiple fetishes in the drawings are fore fronted so that they cannot be ignored during the read. I made this work not in spite of the potential comments it would engender but because I wanted people to voice their opinions.
